Passé composé with être
A fixed group of verbs, mostly about going and coming, forms the passé composé with être: je suis allé. Then the participle agrees: elle est allée.
Why
You tell a French-speaking friend about your trip to Paris with your sister. How do you say that you left by train and came home late?
You say: Nous sommes parties en train et nous sommes rentrées tard. For leaving and coming home French uses être, and because you are two girls, the participle gets -es.
The good news: Dutch often does the same. Dutch speakers also say I am gone, I am left, I am stayed. Only the agreement of the participle is new.
