Why Toer
In Belgium French is not a faraway language: you hear it an hour down the road. Yet for many pupils it stays a list to learn by heart. Whoever gets stuck usually lacks a situation or an example, not talent. Toer starts from what you want to say and shows you the rule you need for it.
Four blocks, always in the same order
Why, See it or Hear it, Get it, Do it. Then the pitfalls for Dutch speakers, where you meet it in real life and a bit of the history of the language. Every topic shows what you need to know first and what comes next.
Exercises that never run out
A generator makes a new exercise each time from long lists of verbs, words and sentences: conjugate, choose the article, make words agree, build sentences, match and translate. When you get it wrong, you see which rule you broke. The conjugations are tested against tables written by hand.
Who makes Toer
Toer is made by Neal Van de Velde (nealvdv), who also made Draad, Ruit and Veer. Questions, mistakes or ideas are always welcome.
Calm and private
No ads, no tracking, no compulsory account, no streaks or notifications that make you feel guilty. Your own browser reads aloud, nothing goes to a server. What you can do is only stored on your own device.

A topic labelled Draft is written with care but not yet checked by a French teacher. The label goes once it has been checked. If you see a mistake, let us know.

Toer is part of Kaft, a family of learning apps with one app per subject. Toer is the school subject French. Part of Toer is free, for the rest we ask a fair price.

Where we come from
Toer is made from a Christian conviction: every child is valuable, and learning a language is a way of going towards the other. The subject matter itself is plain, honest French.
