Passé composé with avoir
You tell what happened with avoir + past participle: j'ai mangé, nous avons fini, ils ont pris. Just like have + past participle in English.
Why
After the holidays your French teacher asks: Qu'est-ce que tu as fait pendant les vacances ? How do you tell what you did?
You answer in the passé composé: J'ai visité Paris. J'ai mangé des crêpes. Nous avons vu la tour Eiffel. It is the tense French speakers use to tell what happened.
You already know the pattern from English: I have eaten. In French it is j'ai mangé. You only need avoir and the right participle.
