False friends: words that trick you

Some French words look like Dutch but mean something else. La librairie is a bookshop, rester means to stay and brave means brave, not well-behaved.

First stage of secondary school12 to 15 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a French teacher.

Why

In Brussels you want to borrow a book for free and ask the way to la librairie. You end up in a shop full of books with price tags. What went wrong?

French and Dutch took many words from Latin and from each other. That is why you often recognise a word straight away: la soupe, la tante, le tram. That helps a lot, until you meet a word that looks familiar but means something else.

La librairie is a bookshop: you buy books there. To borrow a book, you go to la bibliothèque. Words like that are called false friends: they look friendly, but they trick you.
