Clock and calendar: what time and which day

Telling the time with Il est trois heures et quart, in everyday speech and on the 24-hour clock, and dates like le lundi 3 mars.

First stage of secondary school11 to 14 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a French teacher.

Why

You are at the station in Charleroi and hear: Le train pour Bruxelles part à seize heures quarante-cinq. Your watch says a quarter to five. Do you need to run?

When the train leaves, when the film starts, on which day the party is: you hear it every day. French has two ways to tell the time, and you need both.

Seize heures quarante-cinq is 16:45, so a quarter to five. In everyday speech you say cinq heures moins le quart. So yes, run.
